Taking care of your riding boots will prolong their life and keep them in top condition. To protect and care for your leather boots we recommend these 5 steps.
1. Clean your boots thoroughly
Wipe your boots with a damp cloth after each use to remove dust, dirt or any liquids they may have been exposed to whilst being worn. If they have zips, we recommend brushing out the zips with a fine brush with bristles, similar to a toothbrush. This ensures the zips stay in the best condition and are less likely to get caught on dirt and hair when zipping them up.
2. Dry your boots before conditioning them!
Once you’ve cleaned your boots with a damp cloth, make sure you leave your boots to dry naturally away from direct heat before applying any conditioner.
3. Condition your boots
To prevent cracking in leather, use a sponge or our purposely made Dublin Premium Polishing Cloth (which comes in the Dublin Leather Care Kit) and apply a leather conditioner to soften and moisturize your boots. After a few minutes the leather will have absorbed what it can, and you can wipe any remaining conditioner off. We recommend you use the Dublin Leather Conditioner also found in the Dublin Leather Care Kit, which cleans and conditions all types of smooth, natural and imitation leathers, patent and synthetic materials. It nourishes and beautifies leather garments and accessories, contains the conditioning active ingredient lanolin, refreshes the look, gives added gloss, and assists in waterproofing.
4. Polish
Use a boot polish like the fabulous Dublin Dubbin. Dublin Dubbin contains a rich blend of waxes, tallow and oils formulated to clean, nourish and seal all hard-wearing leather. If you’re not using Dublin Dubbin, make sure you check the polish colour is correct first and then rub into the boots and leave to dry thoroughly. Once dry, buff to shine.
For that sparkling finish on the day, we also recommend the Dublin Instant Shine. This silicone oil and wax based sponge applicator pad comes with a protective case so you can take it with you wherever you go. Simply rub on and it will give your boots an instant shine.
5. Weatherproofing time
Use a weatherproofing spray to help protect against future dirt and water stains. Our favourite is the Dublin Rapid Dry Stain & Water Repellent and the Dublin Eco Stain & Water Repellent. These products provide long long-lasting breathable protective layer that repels moisture, dirt and oil to keep your boots looking and feeling their best.
Always test conditioners, polish and weather-proofers on a small inconspicuous area before you cover the whole boot. Do not apply conditioners, polish and weather-proofers to suede, nubuck or distressed leather boots as they can alter the look of the leather.
