If you want to know your body protector size but can’t get to your local Horseland for a fitting, there are some key measurements you can take to find the right fit for you.
Step One: Measure Your Chest
Identify the widest part of your chest under your armpits and measure across. Make sure the tape measure is tight and take a measurement when you breathe in and breathe out, then use the average of these two numbers.
Top Tip: If you don’t have a soft tape measure, use a piece of string and a ruler.
Step Two: Measure Over Your Shoulder
Find your bottom ribs and fit a belt snugly below them on your waist. Then, put the start of the tape measure to the side of your belly button on top of the belt and measure over the top of your shoulder and down your back to the top of the belt. Make sure you keep the tape in a straight line.
Top Tip: Each Racesafe model comes in a standard or tall fit which suits different lengths of torso. The belt helps illustrate where the body protector should come to at the front and the back.
Step Three: Measure Your Back Length
This step is easiest when sitting in your saddle. Find the C7 vertebrae which is the knobbly one at the base of your neck. Then from one vertebra below this, measure down the middle of your back to where the body protector will finish. A good hands width clearance from the seat of the saddle is advised.
Top Tip: If you have a helper on hand, this will make things easier. Alternatively, you can use a mirror to help. Most body protector models are available in multiple back lengths to get the perfect size for you. The ideal back length has good lower back protection yet allows a full range of motion and unrestricted movement.
