Now that Summer has arrived, it's essential to consider how the season's harsh elements can affect your horse's health and comfort. From intense sun exposure to pesky insects and rising temperatures, your horse faces many challenges during this season. Read on to find our favourite products to help you and your horse have a safe and enjoyable Summer.
1. Rug Appropriately
Rugging in Summer is arguably more challenging than in Winter! With warm temperatures, surprise rain showers, and high UV levels often on the same day it’s important to have the appropriate rugs. Take a look at some of our favourite rugs for Summer below.

2. Apply Sun Block
Sunblock is probably the most important item on this list, for both you and your horse. A sunblock is different to sun protection. Blocks literally do what they say: they block UV rays from hitting the skin, offering the best protection from damage. Our favourite product for protecting our horses from sunburn is Ceva’s Filta-Bac.
Filta-Bac is a dual-action sun block offering protection from UV rays as well as being anti-bacterial and anti-septic. It protects sensitive skin from sun damage and can be used to treat minor skin wounds as it is also an effective wound protectant cream. It has been specifically designed for horses, dogs, and other animals so you can use one tub on many of your favourite furry four-legged friends. Ceva’s Filta-Bac has been used on Australian pets for over 10 years and is trusted by some of Australia’s top equestrians to protect their best friends, including Olympic champion Stuart Tinney OAM.
3. Apply Bug Spray
Bug spray is an essential item for equestrians in Summer. These products can be used to protect your horse from biting insects out in the paddock as well as during your rides! We’ve tried and tested all our fly sprays on our own horses to give you our favourites below.
Virbac’s Flyaway Spray protects from nuisance insects such as the bush fly, house fly, stable fly, sand fly, and midges. This product also aids in the prevention of Queensland itch.
Flygone from Vetsense is another super product. The formula is long-lasting and can be uniquely used for ‘zone control’, meaning it can be sprayed on rugs, floats, stables and surrounds for ultimate protection.
