What is a Gullet?
The gullet of a saddle is the tunnel under the fork of a saddle. It prevents the saddle from resting on the horse’s withers and holds the bars of the saddle together. It is a highly important part of the saddle because it is a major factor in determining how the saddle will fit the horse.
The gullet height is determined by the angle of the saddle bars. If the angle is too wide then it will be too low resulting in the saddle resting on the horse’s withers which is not good for the horse. If the angle is too narrow then the saddle will pinch the horse’s shoulders. A general rule of thumb is that the saddle fork should be between two to four finger widths above the horse’s withers allowing you to see the tunnel between them.
