Get Those Whites Looking Mighty Bright!

2-3min read

Whether you own a grey horse of simply have a horse with white markings, here’s some tips on how to get their whites looking mighty bright.

If you have owned a grey horse or pony, you’ll know how hard it is to keep them looking clean, shiny and white. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a grey who looks dirty, dull and stained yellow all the time or having a horse with white markings that also looks like this! Here’s 5 tips to getting that grey horse of yours looking clean and staying that way!

1. Wash with a high-quality shampoo

The first thing we like to do if your grey horse is really dirty is to wash them with a regular shampoo to get the top layer of dirt out of their coat. There are many shampoos on the market, but it’s important to make sure you use one that has been formulated specifically for horses to reduce risk of irritation. Our go-to is the Equinade Showsilk Shampoo Concentrate as it’s pH balanced to be gentle enough for your horse’s skin and coat, and contains Salicylic Acid which is great for skin conditions.

2. Follow up with a white shampoo

These specially formulated white shampoos will be bright purple in colour, but it’s not something to be worried about! The Equinade Glo-White Shampoo has a purple colour that helps to improve the whiteness of your horse’s coat and reduce yellow staining. Lather your horse’s coat, mane and tail or white markings in the extremely popular Glo-White Shampoo and leave this on for up to 10 minutes to get those stubborn stains out. Ensure you always wet your horse’s coat first, as using this coloured shampoo can stain the coat if it’s dry.

3. Smooth and protect with conditioner

It’s important to always use a good conditioner which will smooth and protect your horse’s coat, mane and tail. This will strengthen and protect the hair fibres, reducing the chance of breakage, stains and dirt sticking to your horse. The Equinade Showsilk Protein Conditioner is our go-to as it’s nice and thick, smells beautiful and leaves your horse absolutely sparkling!

4. Do those stains need an extra kick?

Enter: Equinade Mighty Bright which has been formulated to target those naughty stains that won’t budge. All you have to do is mix 10ml of Mighty Bright in at least 1litre of water and pour over coat, mane and tail...no need to rinse! The whitening effect will take place as the Mighty Bright dries. If your horse’s tail is particularly stained, you can also dunk their tail in the bucket of diluted Mighty Bright for a minute or so.

5. Want some added shine?

Although it won’t make your horse any whiter, a hair polish will help to prevent any future staining and discolouration. The Equinade Showsilk Hair Polish can be used on both a wet or dry coat, mane and tail after washing to help repel dust and dirt and keep your horse looking clean and shiny.
