As spring starts to show it's face, that means it’s time to shed those winter woolies!
As your horse acclimatises to the change in weather, they’ll start losing their winter coat. This can be a slow process, with plenty of hair going everywhere on everything! Here’s our 6 tips on how to speed up the shedding process.
1. Dress appropriately
This might be our best tip of the lot… before you start the grooming process, make sure you’re wearing clothes that are less likely to get hair stuck on them. Polar fleece is a big no-no and you’ll be regretting wearing it later when you’re trying to get all of the hair out! We recommend the Dublin Kylee Long Sleeve Shirt II, perfect for grooming as the fabric is designed to shed dirt, hay and horse hair.
2. Time for a bath
Now that you’re dressed ready to tackle a fluffy horse, it’s time to get grooming. After a wet and muddy winter your horse may have a bit of dirt stuck to their coat. We recommend giving them a quick bath with a natural shampoo and conditioner like Equinade Show Silk Shampoo and Equinade Show Silk Conditioner. Get rid of the initial dirt, and let the coat dry so you can commence brushing a nice clean horse.
3. Glove up
One piece of equipment we can’t live without during grooming season is the Kincade Grooming Glove. We recommend you get two so you have a pair and use these post bath as they can be used wet or dry. Not only are they great for giving horses a massage but they are fantastic for grooming and removing loose hairs especially during the shedding season!
4. Massage time
Next take the Kincade Thick Tooth Massage Curry Comb and thoroughly massage over your horse’s body. This brush is quite unique to our other curry combs as it has an ergonomic shape which is super comfortable for the user and again helps to remove loose hairs and give your horse a lovely massage like feeling.
5. Shed the fluffiness
To further loosen those woolly coats, grab the Kincade Shedding Comb. This comb has been specifically designed to pull dead hair follicles from the undercoat for a smooth overall coat. They do sound strong, but don’t worry these fantastic combs will not hurt your horse!
6. Finishing touches
Finally use the Kincade Palm Grip Grooming Stone to ensure any little bits of unruly hairs and dirt are removed from the coat to leave a sparkling and clean finish. Bonus tip… this also works well removing the pesky bot eggs!
