Planning to or just purchased your first horse or pony? You’ll want to check out this list of the 7 must-have items for new horse owners.

When you’re delving into the world of owning horses for the first time, it can be difficult to work out what gear you definitely need versus what’s just nice to have! We’ve compiled a list of essentials for all new horse owners.

1. Head Collar and Lead Rope

This may sound simple, but if you’re going to pick up your new horse it’s important to bring a head collar and lead rope. Not every owner wants to be gifting theirs with the horse, so work ahead and find out the correct size so you can make sure you have the perfect fit. We’ve got a huge range of different colours and styles so you can find the one that suits you and your new horse the most!

2. Grooming Kit

Every horse owner needs an extensive grooming kit to keep your horse’s coat in the best condition possible. We recommend you groom your horse before and after riding, and before you put rugs on. At Horseland we’ve got a huge variety of grooming kits with all the grooming essentials included, or you can mix and match with all our individual brushes.

3. Rugs

Everyone has different opinions when it comes to rugging, but that’s not to say there’s a right or wrong way! To start you off, we recommend having a couple of choices of rugs depending on the weather. During winter a medium or heavy turnout can be ideal, for spring a lite turnout and summer a mesh rug. We’ve got a huge variety of rugs in all different shapes, sizes and price points. Check out our other blogs on rugs: Types Of Horse Rugs And When To Use Them and What’s The Deal With Denier?

4. Saddle and Accessories

If you’re planning on riding your new horse, it’s important to ensure you have a saddle that fits not only your horse, but you as well! If you’re wanting to do a bit of everything, all purpose saddles are ideal for this. If you’re wanting to do dressage we’ve got a large variety of dressage saddles, and a huge variety of jump saddles for those jumping enthusiasts. We also offer a selection of western saddles and stock saddles. We answer the most common questions about saddles in this blog here.

5. Bridle and Accessories

Just like humans each horse is different, so it’s important to find out the type of bridle and bit your horse is used to and source something similar. We’ve got a huge range of bridles and bits to choose from. You can learn more about bits here.

6. Buckets

Although most paddocks have access to automatic troughs, you never know when you might need to supply your horse with water manually. Having a couple of buckets handy is ideal for feed and water supply. We offer a large selection of buckets in all shapes, sizes and colours!

7. First Aid Kit

One thing’s for certain with horses, they often injure themselves when you least expect it at the most inconvenient time. It’s a great idea to keep an emergency first aid kit up your sleeve. Items like the Roma Cohesive Bandages, Roma Cotton Wool Vet Wrap and Virbac Cetrigen are great essentials to always have on hand when you need them. We’ve got an extensive selection of horse health products to cater for you horse’s needs.
